In May 2006, the Cumbria Social Care Specialist Library Collection was launched at Carlisle Public Library. This contains over 200 books and reports of interest to employees within Adult Social Care and Children's Services (social care).
The collection can be accessed either directly from Carlisle Public Library, or from any local public library in Cumbria. You just need to be a member of the public library. You can join free of charge at any public library, or alternatively online.
A full list of the publications within the collection is available on the Directorate e-Library home page, or via CLIC (Cumbria Libraries Interactive Catalogue).
For further details about the collection, please contact Carlisle Public Library on (01228) 227310.
Journals and databases
Social care employees can access a range of journals and databases via a SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence) and Skills for Care pilot project. All you need to do is register for an 'Athens' username and password via Social Care Online (please follow the link on the right hand side of your screen).
The Knowledge Management Team subscribes to various journals, including the British Journal of Social Work (BJSW). Click on the list of journals provided under 'Useful links' for more information.
Social Care Online is perhaps the most extensive database of UK social care information (journal articles, legislation and government documents, and service user knowledge). Please note, however, that most of this information is in abstract form only.
