Carlisle

With an administrative district of over 400 square miles, Carlisle is, by area, England’s largest city.   It is also one of the oldest, its roots pre-dating the Roman era.   The first of its royal charters was granted in 1353.   The great Border City, Carlisle has always been strategically placed, and was a prize once fought over by England and Scotland.   It is a thriving regional capital with a national and international reputation for its environment and quality of life.   Home to a population of more than 101,000, it remains an appealingly compact city in the heart of a rich countryside, a place for business and pleasure alike and a popular destination for shoppers and tourists.

Carlisle has been voted as one of the best places to live in the country, one of the top ten cleanest cities in Britain and England’s tourist destination of the year, besides winning accolades for its shopping centre at The Lanes, its museum and art gallery at Tullie House and its sports and leisure centre at The Sands.
