Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke.  Stroke can most commonly affect people over 65 but anyone at any age can have a stroke, and it can have a lasting impact on many people’s lives.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK and the single most common cause of disability. We estimate that in Cumbria approximately 600 people every year survive a stroke.

Like other vascular diseases, stroke is often preventable and there are now more treatment options.  The National Stroke Strategy 2007 gave guidance to the NHS and Local Authorities around improving information and services for stroke survivors and carers right through the stroke pathway.

Through the Cumbria Stroke Partnership, Cumbria County Council are working closely with NHS Cumbria, Cardiac and Stroke Networks Lancashire and Cumbria and Wired Stroke Support Service Cumbria to improve life after stroke for people.

Wired has been commissioned by Cumbria County Council to provide a stroke support service.  The service covers the whole of Cumbria but is broken down into North, South and West Cumbria.

The service provides Information Advice and Advocacy to stroke survivors and their families and carers. The stroke service has also been commissioned to carry out carers assessments.

Training events have also been held to ensure practitioners and care staff in the county are well informed.

On 1 March 2010, a stroke event was held to share information on progress in all sectors in supporting stroke survivors and their carers:
