In addition to these services, there are other sources of advocacy too:

  • Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) provided under the Mental Capacity Act (2005).
  • Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHAs) provided under the Mental Health Act (1983, 2007).
  • Information, advice, guidance and advocacy for people from all Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds through the Cumbria Multi Cultural Service.
  • Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS) supports people who wish to raise a concern or complaint about any aspect of NHS care or treatment. They are free, confidential and independent of the NHS. Please call 01768 861830 or the helpline 0300 4568348.
There is also a range of local or national voluntary organisations who offer advocacy services, often specific to a particular group of people.  Our Customer Advisers at your local Adult Social Care office can give you details of many such groups.
