Adult placement - What is adult placement?

Adult placement is a flexible service providing care to vulnerable adults aged 18 and over.  This care is provided in the homes of adult placement carers and can be on a short or long term basis.  Living with adult placement carers gives you the opportunity to live an ordinary domestic life as part of your local community.  You will be encouraged to maintain contact with your friends and relatives.

Adult placements can be arranged:

  • on a long term basis - where individuals are matched with adult placement carers with a view to the placement being permanent;
  • on a short term basis - where individuals are placed for short periods of time (such as a weekend or a week) offering carers a break;
  • on an emergency basis - where individuals have to be placed at very short notice following a breakdown in their care, for example where a carer is taken ill; and
  • on a day basis - where an individual or individuals (up to a maximum of 3) receive day care in the adult placement carer's home.
