Cumbria County Council has decided to introduce charges for day care in order to raise money to fund more services. These services will give people the choice and freedom to do more of the activities they want.
The charges will conform to the Government's guidance on fairer charging for services. Many other councils around the country already charge for their day care services.
The new charges will be based on an assessment (or 'means test') of the person's finances. This will help us make sure we charge only those people who can afford to pay. Some people going to day care will be expected to pay nothing more than they do now, some will pay part of the new charge and some will pay the full charge.
The new charge will be for the full package of a person's care. If someone already receives home care and is paying towards this, this will be taken into account.
As part of the financial assessment, everyone will be offered a free benefits check to help them make sure they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to.
