School Book

(Page from William Dickinson of Arcledon's schoolbook 1874)

The Cumbria Record Offices in Carlisle, Kendal, Barrow and Whitehaven  look after the historical records of the county - our documentary heritage.

Original records are stimulating and evocative for all age groups and levels of ability and are relevant to many aspects of the National Curriculum, Literacy Hour, GCSE, 'A' level, and higher/further education courses.

Advice to teachers

Teachers are welcome to visit the Record Offices themselves to discuss their requirements with an archivist. Please telephone in advance to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Arrangements can be made for archivists to talk to groups of teachers eg. on INSET days.

School and Student Visits

Groups of pupils are welcome to visit the Record Offices with their teacher or lecturer to look at original records relating to their area of study and an archivist will be available to help explain and interpret the records during the visit. We can normally accommodate 15-20 pupils at a time (depending on the facilities available at the Record Office in question), but to avoid disappointment please arrange visits at least 2 weeks in advance.
