Our offices in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven look after the documentary heritage of Cumbria from the middle ages to the present day. Archives offer inspiring learning opportunities to all age groups and we have a successful history of working with pupils and teachers at primary and secondary school level.

A visit to the archives adds an extra dimension to a child’s or young person’s learning experience and boosts their self confidence.  Cumbria Archive Service offers a broad range of learning opportunities for school aged children, and professional development opportunities for teachers, as well as supporting learning amongst the higher and further learning community.

School and Student Visits

Groups of pupils are welcome to visit the Record Offices with their teacher or lecturer to look at original records relating to their area of study and an archivist will be available to help explain and interpret the records during the visit. We can normally accommodate 15-30 pupils at a time (depending on the facilities available at the Record Office in question), but to avoid disappointment please arrange visits as far in advance as possible.  School visits are free of charge.
