Access Keys:
It is now nearly 9 years since we actively started planning to move the Archives Office in Carlisle and, with the old Record Office at The Castle now closed, staff are ‘masterminding’ the move of records from 4 sites in Carlisle where the north Cumbrian archives have long been held.
If you bear in mind this is akin to 85 separate house moves you will appreciate that the relocation is going to be a full-time commitment for all the archives staff based in Carlisle, and that the access to the archive collections within their care will be increasingly difficult. Until the new Archives Office now opens, Carlisle staff will now only be able to handle urgent enquiries about records for official reasons (eg magistrates’ court records). Our Research Service will continue to offer expert research for a reasonable fee (email research.service@cumbriacc.gov.uk); otherwise please see details of our our alternative arrangements for access to some records elsewhere.
Your patience and consideration in supporting us to achieve the major task we've got ahead of us is much appreciated. We are looking forward to welcoming people to the new archive centre early in the New Year. We will publish more information about the schedule for opening towards the end of the relocation phase in December.
