Introduction to Service/Eligibility Criteria
PRUs are a type of school established and run by the local authority. They provide a broad balanced curriculum, within a specialist environment to support the social, emotional and behavioural needs of the children attending. The PRUs make short-term provision for pupils that facilitates re-integration into a mainstream school that is based on an assessment of their needs. Pupils will participate in a programme of core curriculum studies, PSHE and therapeutic studies, as appropriate. Progress is reviewed on a regular basis. To ensure a successful return to school, PRU staff will provide continuity with mainstream settings. The PRUs are at Barrow, Carlisle and Distington; each can provide up to 44 fulltime equivalent places in Key Stages 2 to 4, for pupils who are at risk of being or who are permanently excluded.
