12/05/2008 - Cumbrian primary schoolchildren’s favourite book revealed

After months of reading and ruminating, Cumbria’s primary school pupils have chosen their favourite book.

Following a tense few weeks of voting in primary schools up and down the county, pupils have chosen Beware! Killer Tomatoes, by Jeremy Strong as their favourite read in Cumbria’s first Primary Spellbinding awards.

The competition saw pupils sift their way through a collection of eight books specially chosen by Cumbria County Council’s library service.

As part of the judging process, pupils were also given the opportunity to take part in a competition with the chance to have a famous children’s author visit their school.

Storth Primary School were the lucky winners and on Friday 27 June, Penny Dolan - author of The Third Elephant and The Rickety Hall Stories to name but a few - will be joining pupils for the day.

Rachel Perry, from the county council's Library Services for Schools, said: "We launched the award as part of the National year of Reading and it has been a great success. Approximately 1,500 children aged 8-10 have taken part.

"The aim of the award was to create enthusiasm and excitement about books and encourage reading for pleasure. Pupils have also been given the opportunity and confidence to discuss and express their own views about the books."
