Boarding Grant Scheme

The scheme applies to pupils of statutory school age who are educated as boarders. In certain circumstances parents ordinarily resident in Cumbria may be entitled to assistance to cover all or part of the cost of a boarding place at a school funded from public monies and not classed as independent.

Assistance may be given for pupils where:-

(a) both parents (or the single parent of a one-parent family) reside abroad;

(b) the parents live in the UK but are subject, because of the nature of employment, to frequent changes of residence;

(c) a pupil who has already embarked upon an examination course and has completed a significant part of it, move into the County and is unable to transfer to an appropriate course at a local secondary school;

(d) home circumstances are severely prejudicial to normal educational and social development;

(e) there is considerable evidence of exceptional talent in music, drama, sport, dance etc.

In situations (a) to (d), in order to qualify for assistance, boarding education must normally be provided at maintained schools within Cumbria. With regard to (e) the kind of specialised education referred to may only be available in schools outside the County.

The amount of assistance will depend on the income of the parent(s) or guardian.
