Who do I contact about her education?

• The teacher who has pastoral responsibilities for her in school (i.e. Head of Year, House Head). The school remains responsible for her education and will inform the Area Education Welfare Assistant Team Leader.       

What will the Area Education Welfare Assistant Team Leader do?

They will allocate the young person to the support worker who will:

• Visit you at home and provide support.
• Work closely with you and the school to ensure education continues both during the pregnancy and after the baby is born.
• Provide information on other services available.       

Will she be able to attend school during pregnancy?

Yes. There is a legal requirement for her to continue her education until medical advice states she should not attend.       

When will she be able to continue her education after the birth of the baby?

• The support worker and other agencies will work together with you to make an Individual Reintegration Education Plan (IRP) in order that the teenage mother can continue her education as soon as possible.       

Is childcare provision available?

• The support worker and other professionals will help you access local provision.       

Teenage pregnancy affects young people throughout Cumbria...

In Cumbria, Secondary Schools, the Local Education Authority, Morecambe Primary Care Trust, North Cumbria Primary Care Trust, voluntary and statutory agencies are working closely to ensure that:
“No young people, between the age of 13 - 18 years in Cumbria will experience social exclusion as a result of being pregnant or parenting.” 

This is in line with the Government's Programme of Action to ensure that:
Teenagers who become parents should not lose out on opportunities for the future. Young parents should have the chance to complete their education and prepare to support themselves and their family.
