We did… organised a celebration for all those who gave up their time
More than 300 Cockermouth volunteers who have given their time and support in the massive community flood recovery operation have been recognised at a celebration event in the town.
Volunteers, including individuals and those from organisations and community groups attended the event at the Kirkgate Centre, which was organised by the Cockermouth Community Flood Recovery Partnership.
Cockermouth Mayor, Alan Tyson, attended the event and thanked the volunteers, many of whom are still involved in the recovery, on behalf of the town.
Cumbria County Councillor for Cockermouth Alan Kennon, who describes himself as a ‘serial floodee’, gave a special thanks to the county council’s Allerdale Community Unit team and in particular Sally Scales and Phil Atherton who have provided specific support to affected communities in Cockermouth throughout the ten month recovery period.
Cllr Kennon said: “The floods really brought the best out in so many people and the volume of locals who gave their own time and effort was wonderful. It shows the tremendous team spirit we have in Cockermouth and the night was just a small way of paying tribute to them all.”
Sally Scales, neighbourhood development officer for Cumbria County Council, said: “We were delighted at the large number of volunteers that were able to join us on the night which was a real celebration of food, drink, music and fabulous company to celebrate everyone’s achievements through what has been a really difficult time for the community.”
The Cockermouth Community Flood Recovery Partnership brings together representatives from Cumbria County, Allerdale District, and Cockermouth Town Councils; Churches Together; the Chamber of Trade; Cumbria police; the Flood Action Group; Cockermouth Lions, Rotary, and Round Table; Age Concern, and The Kirkgate Centre.
Its aim has been to work together across organisations to bring about a joined up response to last November’s floods, securing community recovery.
