Cumbria is fortunate in having a great deal of community planning experience.  On the back of this and learning from recent Carnegie research there is real enthusiasm to develop this work to a different level. In terms of existing cluster based community planning the following groups have been active:

  • Lively community planning clusters in Kirkby Stephen (upper Eden Community Plan), Appleby, Brampton, North Allerdale, Keswick, North East Copeland, Mid Copeland
  • Action with Communities in Cumbriathis external link will open in a new window (ACT) (formerly VAC) / Lake District National Park Authoritythis external link will open in a new window (LDNPA) community planning in Lorton, Loweswater, Buttermere, Blindbothel; etc
  • Grange & Cartmel has a particular focus on community planning. North East Copeland, North Allerdale, Keswick also have some useful experience
  • Local regeneration partnerships - North East Copeland (ie greater Cleator Moor) Regeneration partnershipthis external link will open in a new window, Maryport Partnership (includes Dearham and rural hinterland)
  • MTI legacy – programmes are active in Ulverston & Low Furness, Keswick and funding in hand (with Copeland BC support) for Millom and Egremont

Current/developing work:

  • West Cumbria Local Strategic Partnershipthis external link will open in a new window's support for 10 localities with local governance, community engagement and responsive management arrangements including a commitment from Copeland and Cumbria Councils to 5 locality boards (Millom, Whitehaven, Mid Copeland, North East Copeland, Egremont) and community forums from April 2009 and from Allerdale and Cumbria Councils for at least 3 (Maryport, North Allerdale, Keswick) by March 2010
  • in South Lakeland, a commitment from the district and county councils towards 8 area partnerships again with governance, responsive management and community engagement mechanisms, implementation to be completed during 2009/10
  • In Carlisle, two community empowerment pilots (Greater Longtown and Harraby – jointly with Carlisle and Cumbria Councils).

Each of the above three areas have active involvement from Cumbria Police and NHS Cumbria.
