Environment Directorate

The Environment Directorate works with a range of partners across the County and beyond to ensure that the people and communities of Cumbria have:

  • A Sustainable and Prosperous ECONOMY, 
  • A World Class ENVIRONMENT, and
  • Effective CONNECTIONS between people and places. 

These objectives are set out in more detail in Cumbria’s Community Strategy 2008 -2028 (Link).

The Directorate was formed in 2008 and is structured across the following main service areas:

SUSTAINABILITY AND PLANNING

This Division focuses on improving and maintaining the environment of Cumbria and deals with issues of Climate Change, Renewable and Nuclear Energy Policy, Spatial Planning, Minerals and Waste Planning and County Council Planning Applications. It also handles Waste Management and Recycling.

HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORT

This Division supports the Council’s Role as the statutory highways authority covering highway maintenance and construction. It also is responsible for Passenger Transport, Road Safety, and Access to the Countryside.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

This Division promotes the economic prosperity of Cumbria in association with Cumbria Vision (link) and supports a range of projects including the regeneration of Barrow (eg Barrow Waterfront Business Park), Carlisle Renaissance, The Energy Coast Master Plan, Business Support Programmes, and The Employment and Skills Board.
