A message from local committee chairman, Geoff Cook:

The local committee for South Lakeland involves your local councillor, has a clear focus on the community and a dedicated local staff. The committee can influence the direction of county services at a local level, including transport and youth services. We aim to be a more open, listening council, through neighbourhood forums and other public meetings.

Locality working in South Lakeland

In recent years people’s aspirations and expectations have risen. People expect more from the providers of public services. People now expect proper consultation and involvement – in short they expect to be able to influence what happens in their community and the way public services are provided to them.

It is now firm Government policy to expect public authorities of all kinds to work closely with their local communities and to open up new ways for those communities to influence what goes on in their areas. A number of Government White Papers and subsequent legislation have been put into place to encourage and support the changes that need to be made.
