Cumbria sadly has had more than its fair share of emergencies in recent years and the Resilience Unit has responded and been involved in every one. As the years pass, it’s easy to forget the wide range of disasters that have afflicted the County, so this page serves to remind us of those dramatic events which have had such an impact on us all.
Some emergencies that have occurred have been fairly small scale and could be dealt with on a local level, whereas some of the bigger events such as Flooding, Foot and Mouth Disease, Grayrigg Train Derailment and the West Cumbria Shootings were emergencies that required national support and resources.
Of course the Resilience unit is a small but vital cog in the massive machine that goes into action when disaster strikes and mention must be made of the emergency services, rescue teams, health service, armed forces, voluntary agencies and many others who have responded to these emergencies with a high degree of commitment and professionalism.
