Building good community relations between people from different backgrounds

Skip main menu

In 2004 the Council carried out a survey into the attitudes of people in Cumbria towards people from different ethnic backgrounds and religions and faiths. The survey suggested a higher than average level of intolerance, that was linked to lack of exposure to people from a range of ethnic, national, linguistic and religious backgrounds.

To address this the Council developed an awareness raising campaign using TV, radio and newspapers to promote good relations. This included:

  • Publishing facts that showed the benefits of migration.
  • Supporting and advising elected Members to promote race equality.
  • Producing a multi-lingual Welcome to Cumbria book that explained about how to access services.
  • Annual calendar of festivals and events.

The annual calendar of festivals and events is produced each year and over 3000 copies are sent to schools, GP surgeries, council offices and libraries. They have been highly commended and are used for lesson planning, artistic projects and themed events put on across schools in Cumbria.

In 2007 the Cumbria Attitude Survey showed a decline in racist attitudes, and more recent surveys suggest that this trend is continuing.
