Call for proud Cumbrians to become the county's ambassadors and aid flood recovery

Cumbria Tourism is calling on all Cumbrians to become ambassadors for their county to aid its speedy recovery after the recent floods.

The county’s leading tourism organisation is urging proud local people to share their valuable insider knowledge of the region to demonstrate to visitors that the majority of the county is unaffected by flooding, accessible and open for business.

A new dedicated section entitled ‘Your Recommendations’ has now been added to their popular tourism website www.golakes.co.ukthis external link will open in a new window.

The ‘Your Recommendations’ area allows people to quickly and easily contribute suggestions and advice for potential visitors to the region.

Passionate locals keen to promote their county to travellers can register for  a ‘my golakes’ account and then recommend their favourite places to eat, drink, walk, visit, shop, sight-see and stay. They can even contribute photographs to accompany their information.

Potential visitors can then view the recommendations and images when planning their break to Cumbria, benefiting from precious local knowledge on great hidden gems and lesser known local favourites.

Cumbria Tourism is keen to spread the word that Cumbria is very much open for business after the recent severe weather and localised flooding and it is hoped that the ‘Your Recommendations’ section will give power to Cumbrian people keen to promote a positive message about their county.

People from areas such as Cockermouth, Workington, Keswick and Windermere, which were badly affected by flooding, in particular are encouraged to get online and provide great suggestions for prospective visitors to their towns and villages.

Ian Stephens, Chief Executive for Cumbria Tourism said:

“Cumbria has had a hard time over the last few weeks but it is now bouncing back.   Our local people are keen to get back to business, return to normal life and continue welcoming visitors to their beautiful county.

“If the flooding in Cumbria has shown anything, it’s the resilience, spirit and strong sense of community of Cumbrian people   and we hope the ‘Your Recommendations’ area of golakes will put the power back in their hands to counteract some of the negative images shown in the rolling news coverage.

“We invite local people to have their say, shout about the places they love and show the world that our door is open, we are ready for business.”

The golakes website receives more than 300,000 visits each month and has generated more than £2.5million in bookings for Cumbria’s tourism businesses so far this year.
