Flood fund announces final date for travel related claims

People seeking support from the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund in connection with additional travel costs caused by closure of the Workington bridges have until Friday 7th May to apply for assistance.   After that date the Appeal will no longer consider travel related applications.

Andy Beeforth Director of the Cumbria Community Foundation which is running the Flood Recovery Fund Appeal said ‘the new bridge at Workington was opened on 21st April therefore we think it is time to close the appeal to travel related claims.   It is good to see life getting back to normal for many people and we are delighted we have been able to help so many people so far’.

The Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund has so far received donations totalling £2.48m.   More than £1.4m has been distributed to over 700 households and 90 community groups. The remaining funds will continue to support individuals who were flooded and who continue to have financial needs plus household flood resilience measures and community recovery projects.

1. THE CUMBRIA FLOOD RECOVERY FUND

Cumbria Community Foundation has launched an appeal to help the victims of the recent floods in the county. The devastating floods have left hundreds of people in temporary accommodation and without possessions. Many were underinsured. Businesses have been destroyed and bridges have collapsed.

The towns of Workington and Cockermouth have been worst hit, but many other areas experienced flooding too. The Community Foundation wants your help to support communities and individuals affected by the floods. They are making grants to individuals and to community groups running projects to help victims. Any donation you can make will make a real difference to those who have had their lives turned upside down.

CumbriaCommunity Recovery Fund

In 2005 the Foundation launched the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund Appeal after the Carlisle Floods. The appeal raised £812,000 and helped 938 households (over 2,000 individuals) and 67 community projects.

In 2001 the Foundation launched the Cumbria Community Recovery Fund to assist people and communities affected by the foot and mouth outbreak. The Appeal raised £2.14m and was awarded Fundraising Campaign of the Year in the UK Charity Awards.

2.   Cumbria Community Foundationis a charity dedicated to improving community life in Cumbria. It does this by:

  • making grants to local charities
  • managing charitable funds on behalf of companies, individuals and public bodies
