Health and Well-being in Cumbria

Healthy living works for all!

Health and Well-being in Cumbria - front cover

Through a strong and growing partnership with the Primary Care Trust and other partners we now fully recognise our potential to make Cumbria a healthy place to live, work and grow up in.

Cumbria County Council shares with its partners a vision for the health of the county, where all people can have:

  • a good start in life;
  • a long and healthy life, adding life to years, and years to life;
  • the opportunity to play a full and active part in their community;
  • control over their own lives, to live life as independently as possible.

We are committed to improving health and well-being in Cumbria by being a health promoting community leader, service deliverer and employer. By valuing our  employees, and promoting positive attitudes and healthy aspirations through our workforce, through our partnerships, and through our contact with citizens of Cumbria, we will be able to tackle the health inequality priorities for Cumbria and within Cumbria.

By doing so we can potentially reach over 1 in 5 Cumbrians… plus their families.

Our work is driven by the Council Plan; the outcomes in ‘Our Care, Our Health, Our Say’ and   ‘Every Child Matters’; and delivering key targets in the Cumbria   Local Area Agreement [LAA].

Health and well-being needs to be an integral part of our everyday life for County Council staff and our partners in order that we can achieve our proposed outcomes. We want:

  • to put healthy outcomes for staff and communities at the centre of Cumbria County Council policy and practice;
  • to promote healthier lifestyles and better sense of well being for staff and our citizens of Cumbria;
  • to make the work place a 'healthy setting' consistently across the County Council.

In our Health & Well-being Strategy and accompanying Action Plan we set out practical actions and commitments to do things differently and make the best possible impact on well-being. The Cumbria County Council Health and Well-being Strategy has been developed alongside a Public Health Strategy (Cumbria PCT) so that we can have a strategic approach to a healthy Cumbria.

We need your help to drive this work forwards. If you have any comments on the Health & Well-being Strategy and Action Plan contact Anne Phillips, Development Manager (designated lead for health improvement)  anne.phillips@cumbriacc.gov.uk or 07837 113472.
