Rewards & Benefits

Cumbria County Council has a variety of benefits in addition to the remuneration package offered to employees.   These benefits cover a wide range of areas from flexible working practices to a final salary pension scheme, ensuring that there is something to benefit every employee.

Flexible Employment Practices

We have an action plan devoted to developing better work life balance.   As well as developing new initiatives it aims to improve existing policies and practices to help people balance their work commitments with their personal lives.   These include Flexible Working Hours, job share, period of reduced hours working, part time hours and parental leave.

Personal Development

We consider that learning and continuous improvement of our employees is crucial to maximize success.   Employees are encouraged and supported in their own personal development to raise their standards of performance and enhance career prospects.   Central to our Corporate Performance Appraisal scheme is the individual learning and development plan detailing the support you need to achieve your full potential which, in turn will help us to meet our targets.

Employee Magazine

Our Communications and Information Unit produce our employee magazine – ‘newsroom’.   It has a good balance of features both on corporate projects and employees.   It also contains news on employee achievements, competitions and a range of other features.

Generous Holiday Entitlement

A job with Cumbria County Council also entitles you to a generous leave entitlement.  The leave allowance is usually between 21 and 28 working days per year, depending upon length of service.

Freephone Support Help Line

The Council provides a free 24 hour Help Line for employees and their immediate family.   Calls to the line are completely confidential.   The service is designed to help employees at all levels of the organization with a wide range of personal and work related problems.   The Help Line is staffed by fully qualified advisors who can provide advice, guidance and information on a range of issues such as general consumer matters, debt/financial issues, eldercare/childcare problems, marital and family problems, work or career difficulties and drug and alcohol issues.

The service is entirely free to individuals and is available 24 hours per day 365 days per year.   It is totally confidential and no one else will know of your call.

The Local Government Pension Scheme

The local government pension scheme (LGPS) is a final salary scheme to which employees contribute 6% of their salary. It is one of the most secure available and in the opinion of independent financial advisors, is hard to beat. A statutory funded pension scheme in its own right, it is contracted out of, and provides benefits every bit as good as, the state of earnings related pension scheme (SERPS).
