The role of the Community Development Worker is to develop family literacy by increasing the number of adults participating in basic skills and family literacy courses and to increase the number of children and their families visiting the library.
Community Development Workers work with LACES, ethnic minority and traveller support services, Cumbria and local Sure-Starts, Children’s centres, schools, youth partnerships, hospitals, Connexions, Adult Education including Family Learning and other community groups.

The Skills For Life Resource Centre
The Skills for Life Resource Centre is now housed in the Daniel Hay Library, Whitehaven.
The collection comprises Skills for Life Teaching and Learning resources to use in programmes with learners and to support the continuing professional development of practitioners.
The centre will be available, by appointment, during library opening hours.
Currently, the hours are as follows: -
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9.30am - 7.00pm
Wednesday and Saturday 9.30am – 4.00pm
Friday 9.30 - 5.00pm
Sunday 12.00 noon - 4.00pm
