Cumbria County Council : Libraries : Community Development Workers

The role of the Community Development Worker is to develop family literacy by increasing the number of adults participating in basic skills and family literacy courses and to increase the number of children and their families visiting the library.
Community Development Workers work with LACES, ethnic minority and traveller support services, Cumbria and local Sure-Starts, Children’s centres, schools, youth partnerships, hospitals, Connexions, Adult Education including Family Learning and other community groups.

There are numerous courses available, briefly these include: -

First Steps – including introduction to IT, Languages, Yoga, healthy food, arts and crafts…… and more
Step into courses, including Step into Reading for Fun
Move on courses- including English, English and It, CV writing and Maths.
ESOL – English for speakers of other languages.
Family Learning courses include: - Storysacks, Keeping up with the children KS1, KS2, KS3, Healthy Living with your child, Family ICT.

From September libraries across the county will be joining forces with the Council's Adult Education Service to offer an array of flexible courses on everything from literacy and maths to creating the perfect CV for that all important job application.
English courses are available for people with a different first language. For the first time, written information on these courses will be available in Polish and Chinese.
