24/8/2005 - £400,000 AVAILABLE THROUGH CUMBRIA AGGREGATES LEVY SUSTAINABILITY FUND [CALSF]

Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust [CWMET] are launching the new Cumbria Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund!

Cumbria County Council has been selected by DEFRA to distribute £400k of funding between now and March 2007 as part of a national scheme using aggregates levy money to tackle the environmental impacts of aggregates extraction.   The County Council has asked CWMET to administer the fund on its behalf.

County Councillor Jack Richardson, Cabinet Spokesman for the Environment said, 'The emphasis with this funding is to compensate local communities for the effects they have suffered from aggregates extraction or transport.   We are particularly keen to support projects involving partnerships and local communities, who can show that their community is or has been adversely affected by aggregate extraction or associated transport.'

CWMET want to hear about projects in areas with active or closed aggregates sites.   A map showing these is available from CWMET.

This grant scheme operates within Cumbria and we welcome applications from Parish/Town and District Councils, community groups, charities and schools wishing to carry out environmental improvement schemes.   Typical schemes may include:

·        Projects that provide, improve or maintain a building, structure or place for the benefit of the community

·        Improvements to the public realm including landscaping, tree planting and conserving or enhancing wildlife habitats

·        Providing or improving footpaths/cycleways

·        New play areas/equipment or other recreational facilities available to the public

·        Projects that reduce or remove impacts caused by aggregate extraction on quality of life, public amenity, or historical or natural conservation sites

·        Projects that promote a better understanding of quarrying in local communities, for example, education and interpretation

The scheme is up and running NOW.   If you think that your community could benefit from a grant from CALSF, and you will be able to complete your project before 31 March 2006, or if you would like to   find out more about the scheme, please contact Gillian Pickford, Assistant Landfill Tax Officer on 01768 242140 or by e-mail cwmet@dial.pipex.com
