25/8/2005 - Positive GCSE results for Cumbria

School children in Cumbria are celebrating today as they receive their GCSE results and the picture emerging is one of great achievement.

As results became known, it is clear that children have done well this year, above the national average.

County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for childrens services said:

"We are still receiving individual results from Cumbria’s schools and it is still early days to be able to give a detailed analysis of these results.   But the picture we are getting at this stage is that there has been a good performance at GCSE level in all of our schools with a significant number reporting a massive improvement on last year.

I am delighted with the progress shown over the past year from the school children in this area. This is a time for celebrating the success of individual pupils and the support given by teachers and parents.   Together, they have worked very hard to raise the standards throughout our schools and these results indicate a great achievement by the children of this area.”
