24/8/2005 - Kingmoor Park fire update

Cumbria County Council's Fire and Rescue Service are continuing their firefighting operations at Kingmoor Park.

Heavy Plant Machinery is currently being used to turn over the remnants of the rubber store and Fire and Rescue Service crews are damping down the debris as this takes place. This operation is likely to continue for the next 24 hours.

The contents of the remainder of the storage area are being allowed to burn under controlled conditions and this is likely to continue for several days.

Water run-off is being constantly monitored by the Environment Agency and they are satisfied that this should have no adverse environmental affects.

Dr Helen Davidson of the Health Protection Agency says:

"Risk to public health is negligible, however, as a precautionary measure the air around the site is being monitored for possible contaminants from the fire during site clearance operations. If anyone has been affected by the smoke they should contact their Doctor."
