Cumbria County Council's Local Area Committee for Barrow today agreed to award neighbourhood development and community grants worth more than £20,745.
From the Neighbourhood Development Divisional Grants budget:
Cumbria Alcohol and Drug Advisory Service (CADAS) will get £1,970 to help pay for a new computer system and help furnish counselling rooms as part of CADAS' refurbishment of its base.
A grant of £4,694 will go to STEPS, a registered charity providing support for children suffering bereavement, loss or separation in Barrow. The money will help the group meet an increasing need for its services.
Catholic Caring Service will get £400. The social welfare agency of the Diocese of Lancaster will use the money help to meet the costs of a display unit to help elderly hard of hearing people choose the right technology to help them.
From the Neighbourhood Development Grants Panel budget:
Shopmobility will get £3,690 towards the cost of replacing scooters used to promote the independence of disabled people living in or visiting Barrow.
A grant of £1000 was approved for Age Concern in Dalton-in-Furness towards the cost of a new heating system.
Barrow and District Disability Association was awarded £977.90 for new sewing machines and an overlock machine to increase capacity at its needlework, dress-making and soft furnishing classes.
Barrow Sea Cadets will get £743.35 to help pay for new flooring at their base.
Alan Nicholson, chairman of the Local Committee for Barrow, said: "It's a real pleasure to be able to give such a large sum of money to community and neighbourhood groups helping people in the Barrow area. There are a lot of good schemes and initiatives here and they are exactly the sort of thing these grant budgets were created for."
