28/2/2005 - County councillors commit £4,270 to economic initiatives in Barrow

Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Barrow has committed an extra £4,270 to the town's Economic Initiatives fund.

The decision today brings the local committee's funding for the Barrow Economic Initiatives fund to almost £27,000 this year.

The fund was set up to support community businesses, the small business community and improve access to the jobs market for the people of Barrow.

The extra cash found by the local committee is to match the offer of a further £4,270 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and the new money will help stimulate economic activity and create jobs in the area.

The committee agreed to support five community businesses.

Alan Nicholson, chairman of the county council's Barrow Local Committee, said: "We have matched the money from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to bring the pot up to £8,540. The money will be used to support innovative business ideas, stimulate the local economy and hopefully it will create jobs for people in the area."
