23/3/2005 - Barriers meet local concerns

Work will start on Thursday 24th March to put up barriers stopping traffic using the Edmund Castle lay-by adjacent to the A69 near Hayton overnight.

Cumbria County Council's local committee for Carlisle agreed to the traffic regulation order and the barriers to meet the concerns of residents.

Local member for the area Councillor John Mallinson said:

"This lay-by has provided useful amenities to the general public however has been subject to repeated unsociable behaviour particularly on an evening. Concerns from nearby residents was put to the county council last year and we looked at how we could address the problems. After a site meeting with various partners it was decided that the best way forward would be to prevent any traffic using the lay-by on an evening and put up gates at either side."

Stanwix and Irthington Neighbourhood Forum will be paying for the scheme for the first year. Funding is needed to pay for someone to open and locking the gates. The scheme will be reviewed after a year.
