Stainburn School and Science College in Workington will be showing off its 'Moodle' to local MP Tony Cunningham on Friday (2 February 2007).
Moodle is a scheme which enables pupils across the county to access lessons on the internet and is run by Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online (CLEO). Tony Cunningham, the MP for Workington, is interested to see how it is working locally and what teachers and pupils think of it.
Cumbria is one of the first areas in the UK to experiment with Moodle, which is a 'Virtual Learning Environment'. Uses of the system include:
- managing homework, including the ability for pupils to download and upload homework and for teachers to mark online
- providing resource links to webpages and files to help teachers build topics or course
- forums and chats for discussion of ideas and concepts
-quizzes
- calendars
CLEO monitors the content at all times to ensure it is safe and secure.
Joining Tony Cunningham MP at the school will be:
- Alison Phillips, teacher and Moodle 'champion' at Stainburn school
- John Swainston, head of Schools and Learning at Cumbria County Council
- John Nixon, School Improvement officer at Cumbria County Council
- Valerie Hallard, West Cumbria Area Development Manager and
- Irene Krechowiecka, Learning Development Manager, 14-19 Partnership
They will join Alison's class where pupils will be using Moodle, giving them an opportunity to see it in action and talk to pupils about their experience of e-learning.
Deborah Murrell, project manager for CLEO, said:
"CLEO's use of Moodle as its virtual learning environment for schools had enabled pupils across the region to quickly begin exploring how e-learning can help support learning and teaching with their pupils.
"Using Moodle has provided a fast and flexible solution and as a result CLEO has been able to invest ni further developments, training and support."
