Pupils at Seascale Primary School will be celebrating the beginning of the Year of the Pig this Monday (12 February) with a special oriental lunch, complete with fortune cookies.
Children at the school will be sampling sweet and sour chicken, black bean chicken, rice, egg noodles and prawn crackers.
As well as marking the Chinese New Year, the aim of the event is to introduce the children to food from different parts of the world. The special lunch is also to highlight that, due to recent changes to the meal service, pupils at the primary school are now being offered two freshly prepared healthy meal options. Before, only one was available.
The Chinese New Year Meal is the idea of Samantha Powell, who is the Kitchen Team Leader at Seascale Primary School.
She said:
"It seemed like a good opportunity to introduce a different kind of food to some of the pupils, mark a New Year celebration, and let parents know that we are fully committed to providing a choice as well as healthy meals for their children."
