12/1/2007 - Temporary Closure of Household Waste Recycling Centres South and East Cumbria

Household Waste Recycling Centres at Ambleside, Barrow, Grange-over-Sands, Kendal, Kirkby Stephen, Millom and Ulverston will be temporarily closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (January 15th, 16th and 17th).

The closure follows Cumbria County Council's decision to terminate the contract of Barrow-based company CAW Ltd which has been operating the seven HWRCs on behalf of the county council.

The closure will allow for the safe transfer of operating responsibility from CAW to Cumbria Waste Management as an emergency measure. Cumbria Waste Management, which operates several HWRCs in the north and west of the county, has agreed to operate the sites until permanent arrangements can be made.

Members of the public will not be able to take waste or recycling to the sites listed above until Thursday, January 18th, at the earliest.

However, anyone with urgent recycling or waste for disposal will be welcome at other HWRCs in the county. Waste permits issued for the affected sites will be honoured at all open HWRCs.

The county council is concerned to protect the interests of around 30 site-based staff who have been working for CAW and any concerned members of staff can call 0845 055 1118 for information.

The same number, open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, will also answer queries from the public.

The county council would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closures but is acting in the wider public interest. Cumbria County Council will do everything it can to re-open the sites as soon as possible and will try to keep the public informed about when the sites will be open.
