A group of students from the Workington area will be the first in the county to receive a National Qualification Entry Level 3 certificate at an awards ceremony on Wednesday (31 January).
The seven students are the first in Cumbria to achieve the Entry level 3 Certificate for Progression, a qualification from the National Open College Network (NOCN).
The students were taught and supported by a partnership of Cumbria County Council's Adult Education Service and West House, a voluntary organisation that provides a range of services to people with learning disabilities living in Cumbria.
The course was made up of 90 hours work, where the students had to complete various assignments and project work covering three different subject areas. These were:
- an introduction to understanding yourself and others
- an introduction to living in the community
- developing skills for using and maintaining garden tools
Charles Searle, head of Adult Education Services at Cumbria County Council, will be at the Workington Legion on Wednesday 31 January to present certificates to all seven students, along with the Mayor of Workington, Councillor Judith Glynn.
Wednesday's's awards ceremony marks the latest in a successful programme that Cumbria Adult Education has been running for the last three years. Called 'Moving on for Adults', it has been especially devised for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities. So far, over 2500 NOCN certificates have been awarded to successful students, ranging from Entry Level to Level 2.
