9/4/2008 - New welcome to Workington

Workington roundabout with ship's anchor

Cumbria County Council is about to complete work on a major scheme to improve the appearance of a busy Workington roundabout.

The pictures shows the new roundabout which is now capped off by a ship’s anchor atop a limestone-faced plinth. The roundabout is the main gateway into Workington from the North on the A596.

The anchor reflects Workington important nautical heritage. The use of limestone also has connections to the town’s industrial heritage through its use as an ingredient in the steel making process.

The county council’s Local Committee for Allerdale have funded the improvement work which has also seen a reduction in the roundabout’s height, and the installation of low-maintenance decorative stone chippings around the base.

A local company, Iss Waterers Landscapes, has agreed to carry out any weeding and upkeep required on the site for next nine years. The company already provides maintenance work in the town for Allerdale Borough Council.

Councillor Gerald Humes, Chair of the Allerdale Local Committee, said: "A local Neighbourhood Forum meeting identified the need to enhance the visual appearance of Northside roundabout.

"The finished scheme is a real improvement which reflects Workington's proud industrial and seafaring heritage.

"I have already been approached by people in the town who have said how much better they think the roundabout looks."
