A special 'Investigation Day' last Saturday (12 April) brought together over 70 Gifted and Talented students from all over Cumbria.
The Investigation Day was a partnership event between NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children) and the county council's Gifted and Talented Education Service and School Improvement Team.
Students and their parents from all over the county gathered for the day at Ullswater Community College, which hosted the day and provided the facilities.
NAGC is a national charity which aims to support bright children and their families. The young delegates aged between 10 and 12 were able to enjoy a choice of fun and challenging activities, meet likeminded friends and have opportunities for problem- solving, creative thinking and investigation.
Maurice Long aged12, from Ullswater Community College attended the event:
"I enjoyed the work shops, I went to ‘An Adventure in Philosophy’ and the ‘Who wants to be an Entrepreneur’. I thought the entrepreneur one was the most enjoyable because it was fun and different. I also met some new people from other schools and got to know students from UCC better"
Other workshop opportunities included ‘Maths in a Suitcase’, ‘An Archaeological Dig’ and ‘A Crime Investigation’.
While the students took part in activities their parents were busy learning more about the characteristics of high ability children and discovered what guidance and support is available to them.
Joanne Steele, Cumbria County Council Gifted and Talented Development Officer says:
"The Investigation Day was a brilliant opportunity for young people and their parents to get together and share ideas. It also gave parents the chance to gain valuable information about the support that is available for children that have different gifts or talents.
"It can be hard for children to stand out when they are either particularly bright academically or if they have an amazing talent. A day like this helps young people gain skills and realise that it is alright to be bright."
