A new state of the art community room at Kendal fire station will be opened tomorrow to help spread fire safety in the area.
An old unused room has been renovated to create the new room and is wired up to be future friendly with interactive whiteboards, a projector and the latest computer programmes.
The room will be used on a regular basis for community safety events, meetings, training sessions and Young Firefighter instruction, and all community groups are welcome to use the room and also be given a look at the fire engines and given advice about home fire safety.
By promoting the community room, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service in Kendal will be able to reach out to all areas of the community, and provide fire safety training for smaller groups which they may not have been able to target previously.
The room will hold between 40 and 50 people depending on the layout of tables, desks and chairs, and will add to community rooms at fire stations in Barrow, Workington and Carlisle.
Cllr Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member for Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, who will be officially opening the community room tomorrow, said: "The investment in this community room will enable the profile of community safety to be raised and I’m sure will prove to be an invaluable resource for the community at large.
"I’m delighted that community groups in the Kendal area will be able to get together as they would normally but now we can offer fire safety advice to even more people and that can only be a good thing. This adds another string to the bow of Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service."
Brian Steadman: station manager at Kendal said: "To see this complete and being used by members of the community is extremely satisfying.
"Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service in Kendal and the south lakes now have a fantastic asset. I can only encourage individuals and community groups to come along and use the room.
"The community room will enable us to deliver key safety messages and help us promote smoke alarm ownership."
A team of Young Firefighters will help open the centre by demonstrating the skills they have been taught during their course.
