Cumbria County Council is proposing to carry out a scheme to enhance Murray Road and Finkle Street in Workington to bring it up to the same standard as the new town centre development recently completed by Allerdale Borough Council.
The scheme will improve the look of the area, make it safer for pedestrians and enhance people's shopping experience. The quality and standard of paving materials will match those used in the rest of the ‘new’ town centre.
The road layout will essentially remain unchanged but more formal pedestrian crossing points and traffic calming measures will be introduced. The physical works have been divided into eight separate phases to minimise any disruption to business and the public. Each phase will be completed before moving on to the next.
The scheme is planned to start in late September/ early October. If work has not been completed by the end of November then it will be suspended over the busy Christmas shopping period to minimise disruption to the public.
The scheme will be discussed and there will be an opportunity to ask questions at a Workington Neighbourhood Forum to be held on September 10 at 7pm in St Joseph’s School, Workington.
A Traffic Regulation Order has already been approved by the County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale in 2007 in readiness for the scheme. The Traffic Regulation Order improves the clarity of where, in the busy streets around Murray Road and Finkle Street , the various parking/loading activities can take place. Additional parking for the mobility impaired and loading/unloading facilities will also be provided.
As each phase of the new proposed work is completed, the new parking and loading restrictions will be marked out and signed. This will enable Murray Road and Finkle Street to operate more efficiently for everyone.
