Alston library will be closed next week (Monday 1 September - Thursday 4 September) and will re-open in the town hall on Friday 5 September, with longer opening times, as part of Alston 'Local Links'.
The first of its kind in the county, Alston 'Local Links' will bring together under one roof county and district council services, and tourist information.
The new facility in the town hall, will add to the existing tourist information centre, and a large section of the ground floor has been refurbished to accommodate the combined services.
Moving the library into the town hall will see a big increase in opening times from the old library. Up to now, the library has been open for 12 hours a week. As part of the Alston Local Links centre, it will open for more than 30 hours a week. Summer opening (until the end of October) will be:
Monday -Thursday 10-5pm
Friday 10-7pm
Saturday 10-5pm
Sunday 10-4pm
Winter opening hours, from the end of October, are to be confirmed.
Other changes people will see are:
- access for disabled people
- a big injection of new books
- an exciting children's library with a train theme, reflecting the local preserved railway
- completely new furniture and shelving to attractively display the books
Coming soon will be a 'self issue' machine, so that people can take out their own loans.
