8/2/2008 - Start of public space improvements for Workington

Work gets underway next week (February 11) to improve the River Derwent corridor in Workington.

Contractors working for Cumbria County Council will be setting up on site on Monday, February 11th, to prepare for the £500,000 scheme.

The Derwent Corridor scheme, funded through the North West Development Agency's Land Reclamation Programme, is designed to improve public access to areas of underused open space by providing routes along the River Derwent that can be easily used by cyclists and those in wheelchairs or pushing prams. It will also improve the start/end point of the Coast to Coast (C2C) long distance cycle route and provide environmental improvements which for local people and tourists alike.

Local building firm Stobbarts are carrying out the work.
