9/1/2008 - One mile of resurfacing on A592 Kirkstone Pass at Patterdale

Work has started on a scheme to resurface around one mile of the famous A592 Kirkstone pass Road.

Cumbria County Council is to spend £380,000 resurfacing a stretch of the road on the route between Glenridding and Windermere along the shores of Ullswater in the heart of the Lake District.

Cumbria Highways is taking a flexible to traffic management with local cars being allowed to pass for access. Large vehicles such as HGVs present more of a problem and advance signs at Rheged, Keswick, Eamont Bridge, Ambleside and Windermere divert traffic away from the narrow and winding A592 via Keswick or Kendal.

The road will be closed between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday from January 7, for up to six weeks, although Cumbria Highways hopes to finish the work early.

Special arrangements have been made to give access to the school buses and emergency services, including the Mountain Rescue Team based nearby. Workers will try to be as flexible as possible to allow local vehicles through for access.

The official diversions must, by law, only send traffic along roads similar to the one that has been closed to make sure that drivers of big vehicles like buses and lorries don’t get stuck or do damage driving on unsuitable minor roads.

The official diversion, therefore, will direct people towards Keswick and along the A591 through Grasmere to Ambleside and Windermere.

Full details of the scheme and official diversions are included in the notes for editors section of this release.
