29/1/2008 - Year of Reading gets off to fine start in Cumbria’s libraries

Library users in Cumbria who have forgotten to return library books, CDs and DVDs are to be let off paying fines during a special 10-day amnesty.

From 6-16 February all items, no matter how long overdue, can be returned to Cumbria County Council libraries without a penalty.

Penalties are being dropped as part of a special customer appreciation event to mark the National Year of Reading.

The 2008 National Year of Reading is a year-long celebration of reading, in all its forms. It will help to build a greater national passion for reading –for children, families and adult learners alike.

In addition to the fines amnesty, library goers in Cumbria will also be able to exchange their library card for another design free of charge (normal cost £1) during the 10-day period.

Councillor Gary Strong, cabinet member for Community Development and Safety, said: "This is an ideal opportunity for forgetful library goers to sift through cupboards and look under beds for overdue items - without fear of being hit in the pocket.

"It is also a great way to promote the National Year of Reading by making sure people who may have been reluctant to come back to their local library, can return with a clean slate."

Becoming a library member in Cumbria is simple and membership is free. For details, people can ask a member of staff at their local library or visit http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/
