1/7/2008 - Appleby Fair - help improve it for next year

A drop-in session and public meeting next week will be examining how Appleby Fair can be made safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Views of local people and any interested parties will be sought at the two sessions, which are taking place at the Appleby Supper Room on Wednesday July 9th.

The drop-in session will take place from 10am - 1pm and feedback from this will be given at the evening meeting of the Upper Eden Neighbourhood Forum from 7pm - 9pm.

The sessions are an opportunity for the Multi-Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group (MASCG), which has taken over responsibility for co-ordinating the fair, to inform people about its new role and to take on board the views of local people on how things should be organised next year.

Key issues up for discussion include:

- Crime and public order

- Traffic and road safety

- Litter collection and street cleaning

- Toilet provision

- Animal welfare

- Medical services

- Transit arrangements for caravans

Cllr Philip Chappelhow, Chair of Eden Local Committe, said:

"There are many different views about Appleby Fair and what it means for the area. The drop-in session and neighbourhood forum present an opportunity for people to air these views and also make constructive comments about what they'd like to change or improve about the fair next year. Everyone is welcome to come along - we want to gather opinions from as broad a range of people as possible."
