28/7/2008 - Passing out parade for young firefighters in Workington

A group of talented teenagers will have their achievements recognised on Wednesday (30 July) after completing the Workington fire station’s ‘young firefighters’ scheme.

Photographers and reporters are invited to attend the passing out parade at the town’s King Street fire station at 1pm where family, friends and instructors will watch the scheme’s successful young firefighters perform hose drills and other exercises before being presented with certificates of achievement.

The scheme helps young people from the town to build their self-confidence and improve teamwork and communication by training them in basic fire and rescue service skills like first aid and rudimentary fire fighting.

The young people involved have undertaken 60 hours of work to pass the scheme over the 12-week course.

Cllr Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member responsible for safer and stronger communities, said:

"The young firefighters scheme is helping our fire crews to forge closer links with young people who may underachieve at school or struggle with social problems. Firefighters can provide inspiration and be positive role models."

The eight young people who have attended the course are aged 13 and 14 and were nominated for the scheme by their schools, Southfield Technology College and Whitehaven High School.
