Following guidance from the Health Protection Agency, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria Police are advising members of the public to avoid Salthouse Mill in Barrow as a precautionary measure following a fire there on Sunday 1 June 2008.
Tests undertaken by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have found small traces of asbestos-containing materials on the building following the fire.
Preliminary advice from the HPA is that these materials will have been contained in the building and will not have been deposited away from the scene. However, further tests are due to take place to confirm this initial assessment.
Until this work has been completed, as a precautionary measure, the public are advised to stay away from the immediate area surrounding Salthouse Mill.
