Pupils from St Mary's CE Primary in Kirkby Lonsdale will be depositing school records dating back to Victorian times at Cumbria Archive Service’s County Record Office in Kendal on Monday (June 9) so that future generations can learn more about days gone by.
A photo and media opportunity will be held at County Hall in Kendal at 1.15pm, where children and teachers will be depositing the records and learning more about the archive service and the treasures it houses. Some of the records from St Mary's date back to 1836 and include photographs and 21 volumes containing details of the day-to-day running of the school, important school events and the names of children starting and leaving the school.
The project has come about as a result of the recent MLA (Museums Libraries and Archives) Learning Links project, where schools have been collaborating with historians and archivists to learn more about the past and construct a detailed snapshot of historical periods.
Another key element of the MLA Learning Links project has been the creation of family learning packs, which can be taken home easily and used by students with their families. Ten packs have been developed to support students in their coursework around several decades in history. Packs focusing on the Victorians, 1910s, World War II and the 1970s/1980s have been created so far in Cumbria. As part of their visit, St Mary's pupils will select further facsimile material for inclusion in their family learning packs
