12/6/2008 - Appeal to cut down school arson in Cumbria

Firefighters are warning schools in Cumbria to be vigilant following a recent spate of deliberate fires in the grounds of several Carlisle schools.

Headteachers across the county have been advised by Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service to assess their schools' level of risk and take precautionary measures where necessary.

These measures include making sure perimeter fencing is in good repair and keeping rubbish in a secure area away from school buildings.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety manager Craig Drinkald, said: "Firesetting is a crime with very serious consequences. It can result in death, injury and massive financial costs for schools.

"We have advised headteachers in Cumbria to check security at their schools and remove the availability of any combustible materials.

"With the summer holidays approaching, we don’t want any schools to fall victim to firesetting. Residents living near schools should also keep an eye out for intruders and contact the police if they have any concerns.

"If parents are worried that their child could be involved in playing with fire, we have trained personnel who are available to offer advice on how to this type of behaviour before it results in injury, death or prosecution."

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service provides a home safety visit service where people can get free smoke detectors and advice on how to reduce their fire risk. The service is free and can be arranged by calling 0800-358-4777.
