Visitors to Workington and Whitehaven fire stations should not be alarmed if they hear children shouting ‘help, fire’ next week.
The commotion is all part of an imaginative scheme to teach children aged 10-11 how to cope with everyday dangers.
Hundreds of Year 6 pupils from Workington and Whitehaven schools will be passing through the fire stations’ doors from 30 June to 4 July.
Here, they will learn how to stay safe through a series of scenario-based practical activities which have been organised by Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and other organisations including the police and Learn Direct..
The scheme is being funded by Nuclear Management Partners - the consortium of Washington Division, URS, AMEC and AREVA which is bidding for the Sellafield management contract.
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety coordinator, Susan Denyer, said: "The aim of the scheme is to provide interactive scenarios that require schoolchildren to make decisions about their safety and the safety of others.
"The project would not be possible without the commitment of firefighters and the other agencies involved. Special thanks also go to Nuclear Management Partners for agreeing to fund scheme."
