Residents of Barrow will be able to get a look at plans to improve one of the town's most important shopping streets in a special exhibition on Wednesday, July 2.
The exhibition, between 5.30 and 8.00pm in the Rydal Room at Forum 28 on Duke Street, will show current proposals for streetscape improvements on Dalton Road and Portland Walk.
The plans are part of a larger package of improvements designed to regenerate business in the town and make Barrow a better place to live, work and visit. Cumbria County Council and its consultant's Capita Symonds have been working with Barrow Borough Council on the town centre improvements.
The top and bottom sections of Dalton Road have already been improved using natural materials, contemporary design and new lighting.
The exhibition will feature display stands and questionnaires so people can see what is planned and offer their comments and suggestions. The plans will be looked at again and may be revised in light of what local people have to say.
Proposed elements of the scheme so far include:
•Continuing the use of high quality, natural sandstone and porphyry further along Dalton Road and onto Portland Walk.
•Contemporary street furniture and lighting
•Improved signage and information
•Improved cycle storage
•Tree planting
•Considering improvements to the public space at the Dalton Road / Portland Walk junction where The Spirit of Barrow statue stands.
•Possible installation of a glazed canopy to cover the statue / seating area at the Dalton Road / Portland Walk junction.
•Other issues which will be considered including loading to the rear of properties and potential bus routes through the town centre.
