New information signs are being erected on roads around a popular Lake District beauty spot in an attempt to cut traffic and ease pressure on car parking.
Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale has agreed to pay for new signs to help ease congestion around Cat Bells on the western shore of Derwent Water. Around 20 signs are due to be erected before the Easter school holidays.
Renowned Lake District writer Alfred Wainwright famously described Cat Bells as ‘one of the great favourites’ and the fell recently featured in the popular television programme Wainwright Walks, presented Julia Bradbury.
Cumbria Highways is working with the National Trust, local parish councils and other organisations to find additional solutions to the parking problems in the area.
The new signs will advise drivers heading for the popular walking destination where they can and cannot park. Other signs will encourage motorists to swap their cars for the three B's - bus, boots or boat - and follow in the footsteps of Julia Bradbury and Alfred Wainwright.
Parking on the narrow, winding approach to Cat Bells obstructs the Honister Rambler Bus, emergency services, farm vehicles and causes other dangers.
