Cumbria Highways has been pulling out all the stops to fix the storm damaged B5300 coast road at Dubmill Point near Allonby.
Stormy seas left a huge hole in the road after water breached the sea wall and washed away around half of the road last weekend. The high tide and storm surge that came with the violent storm on Tuesday this week washed away the rest of the carriageway.
Cumbria Highways began work to re-open the road as soon as the threat from spring tide and storm surge receded.
Progress so far has been good and the hole - 15 metres long, three metres deep and across the whole width of the road - is already around two thirds full.
Cumbria Highways estimates that some 750 tonnes of rock and concrete (550 tonnes (240m3) of concrete and 200 tonnes of rock) will be needed to fill the hole before the road surface can be re-laid.
Cumbria Highways staff are working throughout the weekend and aim to be putting the final surface down and getting the road open during the week so things are back to normal for the Easter bank holiday weekend.
Local businesses remain open as usual right up to the closure which only affects around 300 metres of road.
